Dear Parents, Several years ago, we implemented the car line in an effort to unload and load students in the safest way possible. Prior to the car line, we had two safety issues that triggered the change. First, we had a student who unloaded out front of our building one morning. After he stepped out of the car, he crossed into the parking space next to his vehicle. Another car was pulling into the space he was crossing. The car tire actually rolled up on this child’s foot. We were very fortunate the incident didn’t cause serious injury. Second, prior to the car line, we had multiple incidents where elementary students were defying their parents after school plans and sneaking to their friend's house. They were getting into vehicles to go home with friends instead of riding the bus. It was impossible for us to supervise the approximately 100 students loading into vehicles in individual parking spaces surrounding our building. Creating the car line and loading 5 vehicles at a time has prevented both of the types of safety issues mentioned above. Please remind your high school students, grandparents, and other relatives who deliver and pick up your children, to use the car line for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. The line does take a few extra minutes of your time, extra staff members to make it possible, and some patience from all of us. Your child’s safety is worth it. JES Instrument Night
The Jayhawk Elementary car line will be open at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning for students who arrive in a personal vehicle. If you are new to USD 346, please make sure you drive to the far south side of our campus in the single file lane. The south side of the building will be on your right, and you will see a solid row of trees just to your left. It is important that you do not drop students off in our bus zone or staff parking lot. I will send a more detailed message to you later this week explaining the safety concerns that prompted us to use the car line for our drop off and dismissal times. Thank you, Mark Proffitt Jayhawk Elementary Principal
