The Kansas State High School Activities Association has amended their previous ruling on spectators at winter activities. Beginning Thursday, December 10th, 2020, KSHSAA will allow up to two parents/guardians per family of a participant to attend the event. In addition, KSHSAA is requiring that spectators wear a mask or facial covering to help prevent the spread of disease.

As many of you have already heard, the Kansas State High School Activities Association recently passed new guidelines for our Winter Sports and activities seasons. KSHSAA has placed a guideline that prohibits spectators from attending our winter activities until January 28, 2021. We know how much our youth means to the community and completely understand the frustration that all of you, especially parents, must be feeling right now. Please know that we are working on the ability to live stream games (both varsity and junior varsity) at both HS and JH levels until KSHSAA decides that we are once again allowed to have spectators present. Hopefully that decision comes sooner rather than later!!
Stay tuned for further information concerning our live streaming procedures!

Attention Parents - Jr. High Basketball games scheduled for tonight vs Arma have been Postponed. Make-up date TBD

All Junior High Basketball games scheduled for November 24th at home vs Marmaton Valley have been postponed and rescheduled for Thursday, December 3rd at 5:30pm at home.

Bus M6 riders and parents we have learned this morning (11-16-20) there was a positive case of COVID reported on that route. Because masks were worn correctly by the person who tested positive and the other passengers, there will be no quarantines. Please monitor your child’s health and keep them home if they exhibit any symptoms.

Junior High Basketball Tonight at Oswego.
5:30pm start for B team boys and 8th grade girls game.
A team boys will follow the 8th grade girls game.
Oswego COVID requirements:
1. Masks are required to enter contest and when social distancing is unattainable.
2. Temperature checks will occur at entrance
3. Some seating areas will be marked as unavailable to promote social distancing.
4. Concessions will be prepackaged items only.
Thanks for respecting the Oswego school districts expectations.

Jayhawk Community - We are sharing with you this COVID update and a plea that you help us by wearing a mask, abide by social distancing guidelines, and wash/sanitize hands frequently to prevent the spread of the disease in order to keep our school open with students on-site. Currently, the district has 5 COVID positive students, 42 students on quarantine, and 23 students at home on precaution. Regarding staff, we have 4 positive cases of COVID, 1 staff under quarantine, and 3 staff members under precaution. With 8 staff members out of the building and limited substitutes, our ability to keep students on-site learning is becoming increasingly difficult. The difference between a quarantine and a precaution is that quarantined students or staff have had a close contact with a person who tested positive for COVID. A student that is under precaution may have 2 or more symptoms and have not been tested, isolating by a self-quarantine, or has been called in by a parent.
Symptoms include:
Fever or chills Headache
Cough New loss of taste or smell
Shortness of breath Sore throat
or difficulty breathing Congestion /runny nose
Fatigue Nausea or vomiting
Muscle aches Diarrhea
If you are interested in becoming a substitute at either Jayhawk Elementary or Jayhawk-Linn High School, we are in search of: Teacher subs, Food Service subs, Custodial subs, Para subs, and Bus / Suburban Driver subs. The substitutes will be called to work as needed. Hours and positions vary. Please call (913) 795-2247 for an application and more information.
Finally, this has to be a community effort! We have already experienced stories where most of our healthy children have recovered well from COVID-19, but, during their recovery, spread it to a loved one at home who has not recovered as well. We believe that 95% or more of the positive cases we are dealing with, originated outside of school. Again, PLEASE do your part at your family and social gatherings outside of school; mask up, social distance, and wash your hands frequently.
Thank you!
Royce Powelson Ed.D

Lifetouch Picture RETAKES Tuesday, November 10.

Reminder: No School Friday, November 6 due to teacher in-service.

Today, November 3, 2020, USD 346 was notified that two students at Jayhawk Elementary and one student at Jayhawk Linn High School have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. District officials have completed contact tracing of the students. Staff and students who may be affected have been notified of quarantine measures that need to be followed. If your child experiences any symptoms of the COVID-19 virus which are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include: fever, coughing, shortness of breath, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, fatigue, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, you are asked to keep them home from school. Individuals who need medical care should call their medical provider to report their illness prior to seeking care at a clinic, physician’s office, or hospital. Parents of students exhibiting flu-like symptoms or staff exhibiting flu-like symptoms are asked to contact the school nurse, local health authorities or the Linn County Department of Health. It is important to note that during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic we all must take precautions and remain diligent in order to continue to provide “on-site learning” for the students. It is equally important that ALL students and staff continue to practice safety protocols that have been put in place. We are following our guidelines to lessen the extent of exposure of the virus as well as working with the Linn County Health Department to determine if any further measures need to be taken.
Thank you.

Students spent the day sketching and photographing "live" wildlife animals at a close distance.

USDA Extends Free Meals for Kids for 2020-21 School Year!

JLHS photography students recently engaged in project-based learning off-site projects. These students are studying how to photo shoot architecture inside and outside. Prior to their actual location shooting, students had to research both ways of shooting as well as do an indoor/outdoor practice session at the Mound City Courthouse. According to student Bradley Rhodes, "It takes a lot of patience to adjust your camera settings to where it needs to be." The students' final "real" photo shoot was then completed at the Lyons Mansion in Fort Scott and Cedar Crest Lodge in Pleasanton.

Due to Covid-19 concerns at Chetopa, the High School Volleyball matches scheduled there on Tuesday, October 13 have been cancelled. We are currently working on a replacement for those lost matches and will provide updates if that is available.

Many school districts in the area and state are quarantining students, cancelling sporting events, and pivoting from on-site instruction to remote learning programs because students were exposed while not wearing masks. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment Deputy Epidemiologist has shared that to keep schools open and in on-site learning, our students, staff, and community must be willing to wear masks properly (covering the nose and mouth). The nation’s CDC director said recently that masks are the “most powerful health tool” equal to that of a vaccine. USD #346 will expect all students and staff to wear masks.

Do you live in Linn County and have children ages 0-5? Have you signed up for free books through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library? Due to illness concerns in Baxter Springs, the Varsity Football contest scheduled for Friday, September 18 has been cancelled.

Students and Parents of Jayhawk USD #346 – KDHE and Linn County Health Department shared today that we have 3 new Covid cases in the county this week. On Tuesday (9-8-2020) we learned there were no new Covid cases over the Labor Day weekend or the week prior to Labor Day (week ending 9-4-2020). In all, we had 4 positive indicators last week on the new KSDE gating matrix and had 2 positive indicators and 2 neutral indicators the week prior (ending 8-28-2020). Because of these good numbers we will pivot from “Hybrid” instruction to 5 days a week “On-Site“ instruction beginning next Friday, September 18th. Hopefully, sharing this information a week ahead of time will give our families, food service, transportation, and staff time to plan for the changes. All students and staff will still be required to wear masks and practice social distancing. Remote learning is still available for those families that prefer that option. Thank you for being patient and respectful during these tough times as we continue safety measures to keep kids safe. More information will be released later from our specific buildings.

Dear USD #346 Parents,
The United States Department of Agriculture has announced the Summer Food Service Program will be extended through the end of December or until funds are depleted. As a result of this September 1, 2020 decision, beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2020, ALL breakfast and lunch meals will be FREE to ALL enrolled students. This is a program funded through USDA. There is no paperwork involved. (Lunch money in student accounts will be held for use when the free breakfast and lunch program is no longer offered.)

JLHS had a fantastic start to the 2020/21 school year!! Thanks to everyone for the support and understanding as we work our way through some tumultuous times.
Clarification on the student learning logs: teachers are providing recommended timeframes for assignments and projects. These recommendations are designed to help students manage their time as our goal is to achieve 360 minutes of engagement each day that a student is working in a remote setting. Please understand that these recommendations are just a reference and that we understand that students may need more or less time than what is recommended. Please record the estimated time that the student was engaged with the activity on the log even if it is different from the recommendation. Please have students turn in their log to their HawkTime teacher on the first day they return to face to face setting each week.
Thank You!!

JES parents please feel free to send your child with a filled water bottle each morning. We will be able to refill them in classrooms as needed. Disposable cups will be available in classrooms if you forget or can't send one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) for USD #346:
1. What data does the district look at to determine on-site, remote, or hybrid models of instruction?
Answer: Number of confirmed cases of students (not public because of HIPAA-Health privacy rule), number of students exposed (not public because of HIPAA), county total of new cases and total cases (KDHE website). In general, if our district experiences a steady 14 day decline in COVID numbers or better has no new cases during that time, we will “pivot” to on-site learning and bring all students back. WE WANT ALL KIDS IN SCHOOL - having all students back would be easier on everyone, just not safer at this time. We are planning for the worst and hoping for the best!
2. Will families be grouped together in the A/B hybrid model?
Answer: YES, when enrollment is over we will provide you with student groups in PowerSchool.
3. Will the buses run for transportation?
Answer: YES, when enrollment is over we will contact you with student bus route information.
4. Will SPED children share the A/B hybrid model?
Answer: Yes, after enrollment our staff will be contacting you to share the individual education plan for your child.
5. Will the school have activities and can remote students participate?
Answer: YES, the school will follow KSHSAA rules and recommendations. Practices will begin August 17th and remote students may participate if they are full time students per KSHSAA rules.
6. Why aren’t all Linn County Schools doing the same thing?
Answer: The Kansas State Board of Education voted 5-5 to override an executive order from the Governor that all schools in the state start September 9th. Now, the state probably has 286 different plans for its 286 school districts. Based on the information we shared in Question 1, schools are determining what’s best for their individual district based on their data.
If you have other questions please email me at rpowelson@usd346.org.
Thank you for your patience. Changes are happening everyday from our state agencies. We will do our best to keep you updated.

USD #346 family.
Due to the current Linn County COVID-19 numbers, the first day of school for USD 346 students will start school in a Hybrid model on August 20th, 2020. Hybrid model means your child will receive on-site instruction two days a week and remote learning 3 days a week at home. In the hybrid model we begin school with students organized into two groups “Group A” and “Group B”. Group A students will be on campus Monday and Tuesday while Wednesday will be a deep cleaning day of the facilities; Thursday and Friday will be Group B on-site instructional time. On this schedule, ONLY Group B will begin school on August 20 and 21. Group A will begin attendance on Monday, August 24. Building administrators will communicate with students/families regarding students in Group A and B. All students and staff will be required to wear a mask at least until September 15th. If you want your child to have all remote learning (5 days a week at home), we will be able to accommodate that as well. Building administrators will be in contact with families who requested all remote learning after enrollment is completed. When Linn County COVID-19 numbers decline, we will bring all hybrid students back into a traditional on-site 5 day a week learning model. Currently, our Building Leadership teams have met and begun the redesign of teaching methods for your child under the hybrid model. Reminder that Online enrollment is available July 29th through August 7th on PowerSchool through our USD346 website. USD #346 patrons: Today 7-22-20
UPDATE regarding the 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR:
Jayhawk has completed an on-line enrollment option for you to enroll your children which will be available beginning Wednesday, July 29. On-site enrollment will be different than in the past and will not occur until the week of August 3, 2020. We will share more about enrollment in later posts, so stay tuned.
We would also like to communicate the current district challenges:
1. We received the Kansas State Department of Education guidance document last week to redesign schools. We need to provide training time for the teaching staff to develop lessons associated with the Navigating Change document as it is over 1000 pages. The recommended redesign involves providing 3 methods of education to our students: On-site learning, remote learning, and/or hybrid learning plans.
2. As of today our district has received about a third of the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed to have on-site school- even though it was ordered in April/May.
3. We are currently a “hot spot” with our students having at least five positive cases and cross tracked students ”exposed” being over sixty so far. Sixty student exposures represent about 10% of our student enrollment. We believe this number will rise in the coming weeks. We have had two new county cases this week so far which is good news compared to last week.
As we continue planning for the 2020-2021 school year we have included a survey for your input. We appreciate you taking the time to fill out the survey completely as much of the data will assist into our continued planning for the 2020-2021 school year.

Drivers Education classes will begin at JLHS on Monday July 20. Social Distancing protocols will be utilized and students are encouraged to wear a mask. Temperature checks will be conducted when students arrive. If a student is feeling ill, we ask that they please stay home!

Summer conditioning and sports specific events are cancelled for Monday July 20th. Our hope is resume those events later this week.

Jayhawk students, parents, patrons - We are just a few hours away from Graduation 2020. Thanks to everyone for your patience as change has been frequent these past few months. The students have their time slots for tomorrow (7-18-2020) to share with family and friends. Graduation speeches will be played at 9 a.m. and again at 9:15 a.m. on both the FM radio station 106.3 and on line at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkmuoXkyYeY . At a later date we will have a full video of the graduates and the speeches available to all. Please note that the FM radio station 106.3 will only travel about a mile from the high school and is intended for you to hear as you stay in your car in the parking lot. Parents and guests we encourage you to “park outside the lines” when you are parking in the JLHS parking lot tomorrow. The stage is in between the flag pole and the front doors of the high school, please feel free to angle your vehicle where it gives you the best view of the stage even if it’s outside the lines. At 9:30 the first group of students will begin the drive-through graduation ceremony. Please feel free to leave after your graduate has received his/her diploma as it might allow another family to see the stage better. Graduates- If you have any questions, please find me in the morning on the south side of the bus loop.

Today July 15th, 2020
Today we had another case of COVID-19 confirmed in our county and believed to have close ties with our school district. We may have as many as 5 students who have tested positive at this time. Because of these numbers and the possibility of others exposed we will proceed with our safest plan- the Drive through Graduation Plan for this Saturday.
Students will be allowed to have 2 carloads of family or friends drive through in front of JLHS where there will be a stage. Family/friends may exit the vehicles to take pictures and share the moment with their senior receiving a high school diploma. (We request that the student pick a person from their family to present them their diploma on stage). We will share the ceremony over a FM radio band for those who are supporting a student in the parking lot. Speeches and the receiving of diplomas will be live streamed for those at home. To follow social distancing guidelines, we will have (6) 30-minute sessions for graduates to be recognized beginning at 9:30 am. In other words, 6 graduates will drive through from 9:30 to 10 am and another group of 6 graduates will drive through from 10 to 10:30 and so on until the final group from noon to 12:30. I will share tomorrow the graduates’ specific time slots so your family can be present at the correct time to support your graduate and leave if they wish.
Seniors we will go ahead with graduation rehearsal tomorrow evening at 7 pm, but I request you stay in your car. I will give you directions over the radio from the stage area. I realize this is not a traditional graduation, but our seniors have been unique since grade school, and no other class has had a graduation like this. They have shined on the darkest days, stayed calm during the craziest of times, and adapted to change like no other class has encountered. We are truly proud of our Jayhawk seniors and can’t wait to celebrate with you on Saturday.

July 15th 2020
Parents and Students: As the number of active cases of COVID-19 continues to rise and hospitals in parts of the state fill to capacity with patients affected by this virus, Governor Kelly and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment have decided it would be in the best interest to push back the reopening of schools. On Monday, a record spike pushed Kansas to over 20,000 cases with nearly 300 deaths. Schools will reopen after Labor Day on September 8th. We will release more information later on enrollment dates, Drivers Ed, and what the school year will look like. We are still mandated to provide 1116 hours of instruction to the students and to be clear this is a delay in the reopening of schools.

Today July 14th, 2020
Parents and Students: Monday evening we received word that we may have possible student cases of COVID -19. Today we were able to confirm that information. We believe at this time that there are multiple exposures in our area and may continue to multiply. Because of this latest trend in the county, we will hold graduation outside this Saturday. We have 2 choices under consideration at this time: 1. Host the graduation program in the football stadium; or 2. Hold a drive-through graduation at the JLHS. We feel the stadium graduation would offer a more traditional ceremony for our students, while the drive-through approach would be the safest option for our students. We will monitor the county’s COVID numbers the next few days and try to give you a definite answer Thursday as to which direction we will move toward. In all probability if the county’s numbers stabilize or decrease, we will do a traditional outside ceremony. If the numbers increase the next few days, we will probably host a drive-through ceremony. Whatever that direction is, we appreciate the hard work of our seniors throughout their school years and hope to provide the safest celebration for their efforts. Please check back for information.

What we know today for USD #346:
Graduation is our top priority this week and is still planned for Saturday July 18th at 9:30 am. We plan on holding the ceremony inside the main gym where each graduate will have a designated space for their family and friends to social distance from others. The space or “pod” has enough seating for 8 guests of each graduate. If a graduate has more than 8 people attending the celebration there will be overflow areas designated in the JLHS auditorium, JLHS cafeteria, and corridor area. Wearing a mask is strongly recommended as well as keeping a social distance of at least 6 feet from others during your time on campus. We plan to “live stream” the ceremony to accommodate those that feel more comfortable staying at home. A link for the live stream will be released later in the week. We have also developed a contingency plan to host graduation at the football stadium if need be on Saturday. Thank you for your patience, consideration of others, and interest of celebrating our students’ years of hard work! Stay safe.
During your time on campus we encourage you to:
1. Wash hands and use hand sanitizer frequently;
2. Cover coughs;
3. Refrain from touching faces or other surfaces.
4. Wear a mask.
5. Don’t attend if you are not feeling well and/or have a temperature;
6. Remain 6 feet apart from others
7. Submit to any wellness protocols established by the district for participation in school activities. Such protocols may include, but may not be limited to, temperature screening upon entry to any school facility, property, or event.

Summer Conditioning and sports workouts for both High School and Junior High will not be held until further notice. We hope to begin those workouts again soon!

What we know for USD #346 on July 8, 2020
Kansas is in the Top 14 in the nation for having both the fewest restrictions and the fastest coronavirus spread.
Linn County has had 18 confirmed cases and currently has 5 active cases. Covid-19 data shows that there is a 2% death rate and an 11% chance of hospitalization if you are infected with the coronavirus. A hospital bill for being on a ventilator for three weeks can exceed 1 million dollars.
Graduation is still planned for July 18th at 9:30 AM. We believe we can keep everyone safe by social distancing and wearing masks if need be. We have several plans prepared for that day (inside-both gyms and overflow areas, outside, or even a drive-in graduation if need be). We will monitor the county numbers and decide closer to Graduation day what works best for our situation. Please check our website and/ or Facebook page prior to attending graduation for last minute information. We will continue to ask everyone to follow these practices while attend school functions:
1. Wash hands frequently;
2. Cover coughs;
3. Refrain from touching faces or other surfaces unless required for the school activity;
4. Wear a mask unless the school activity does not accommodate this precaution, as determined by the district administration and as directed by the school activity coach/sponsor;
5. Don’t attend if you are not feeling well and/or have a temperature;
6. Remain 6 feet apart from other students and staff whenever the school activities allow;
7. Submit to any wellness protocols established by the district for participation in school activities. Such protocols may include, but may not be limited to, taking the student’s temperature upon entry to any school facility, property, or event.
Prom- After much consideration and visiting with educational, medical, legal, and county staff members we are making the tough decision to cancel Prom which was scheduled for July 25th. We are most disappointed for the students, but also apologetic to the parents who have bought dresses and ordered tuxes.
Beginning of school- The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) will be sharing recommendations and guidelines for educational practices and safety of students and staff on July 16th. Our administrative team will meet on that day and adjust our current plans to hopefully adopt best practices for our students, staff, and community. Prior to or during the week of July 20th we will send out another round of surveys so you may have a voice in the overall plan.

There will be NO conditioning and volleyball on Tuesday, July 7th, but instead makes plans to attend Girls Basketball camp, Monday-Wednesday, July 6-8th. Conditioning and volleyball will resume on Thursday, July 9th at 6:00 p.m.

Update - The USD 346 administration is very concerned with the increase in Covid-19 infections in Kansas. While we have not changed our plans for the July 18 Graduation as of yet, please check our communication platforms frequently in case we do have need to make such a change.
Due to the nature of our planned Prom, we are questioning the ability to ensure student safety during such an event and will be making a decision in the next few days as to whether we will proceed with Prom. We apologize for the uncertainty, but will do our best to keep our students safe during the pandemic. We will update frequently through our communication portals.

Parents and Students: Today (6-30-2020) is the last day of our Summer Breakfast and Lunch program. A special thank you to food service workers, bus drivers, and other essential staff that produced and delivered nearly 4500 meals a week since late March. We are blessed to have so many caring people work for our school district.
As for the future, the administrative staff and I have been working on 3 different plans to begin school in August. Which plan we use will depend upon the trend of COVID-19 cases closer to the first day of school which is scheduled for August 13th. The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) will be sharing recommendations and guidelines for educational practices and safety of students and staff on July 16th. Our administrative team will meet on that day and adjust our current plans to hopefully adopt best practices for our students, staff, and community. Prior to or on the week of July 20th we will send out another round of surveys so you may have a voice in the overall plan.
Currently, we still plan to have graduation July 18th at 9:30 am at the JLHS gym and we hope to provide enough space where everyone is able to social distance. Right now, masks will be strongly encouraged unless COVID-19 cases start to neutralize or worsen closer to graduation day.
Finally, I have been asked to encourage all of you to participate in the 2020 Census and share why it Is Critical for Our Children’s Future. The talking points are listed below:
• it is so critical to count everyone – especially our children – in the 2020 Census.
• The census determines each state’s representation in the U.S. House of Representatives and helps decision-makers in Washington, D.C., Topeka and Linn County determine how to allocate funds for programs that serve children – including those we are proud to teach – in our community and other small towns.
• Counting everyone in your household, including children, ensures they will be included in the 2020 Census. This is important because census statistics help determine funding for the next 10 years for new schools and programs such as special education, teacher training, rural education, Head Start and nutrition assistance. Yet young children are among the populations historically undercounted in the census. So please be sure to count all children in your household, including babies born on or before April 1. If we do not count everyone, our area could lose critical funding for programs, including those that support education, for the next decade.
• By now you will have received information about how to fill out the 2020 Census. You are encouraged to respond promptly at my2020census.gov, by calling 1-844-330-2020 or by mail.
• So far, 50.7% of the households in Linn County have responded, but we need to count everyone. Help ensure our children count and that we are taking this important step to shape their future.

JLHS GRADUATION UPDATE

USD #346 Student, Parents, and Staff. Today is May 22nd and marks the end of the school year for most students and staff. Over the past several weeks 97% of our students have engaged in our continuous learning program that has allowed those students to receive course credit and for our seniors -- a high school diploma! Disappointingly, that leaves 3% of students who chose not to do any work after constant communication and pleas from the teachers and administration. This is typical data of the regular school year. Students, if you have a parent who insisted that you complete your school work, you are blessed to have that type of support and care at home (you may not understand that yet).
We shared recently that Graduation for the seniors will be July 18th @ 9:30 a.m. at the JLHS football stadium.
Food Service deliveries and carline will remain running for everyone who has been receiving them through June 30th (normal times and locations). If you do NOT wish to receive meals in June, please call our office at 913-795-2247 or email Carla Leavitt at: cleavitt@usd346.org otherwise, we will keep providing meals to your child like we have for the past 9 weeks. You do not need to call if you would like to continue receiving meals at the bus stops or carline. There will be no meal deliveries on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. Buses will be rolling again on Tuesday, May 26 and carline will be open Wednesday May 27th.
For everyone- now more than ever, I appreciate supportive parents, hard-working students, and our staff members. It has been rewarding to observe our staff working with your child in alternative ways while displaying patience and care. On behalf of the Board of Education and Staff: we can’t wait until August 13th to see the smiling faces of our students for the 2020-2021 school year.

JLHS "Cruise Night" is scheduled for Friday, May 15th from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. Wash and wax your best set of wheels and join us as we Cruise Mound City and honor our graduates here at the end of school. Graduates that may experience scheduling conflicts with the July 18 date are encouraged to contact Shawn Thomas at JLHS.

SENIOR SURVEY by Kansas State Department of Education-
In response to the closing of school buildings due to the pandemic, the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has partnered with a group of senior high school students across the state to discuss ways in which the Class of 2020 could be honored during the month of May.
While high schools across the state are recognizing their graduates in a variety of ways, this group of senior leaders wanted to identify a special statewide program or initiative organized by members of the Class of 2020 to honor their senior year, which was cut short. Ideas have ranged from a statewide social media campaign to some sort of civic engagement activity that all seniors would take part in on a specified day.
Please answer the survey below by adding your best idea or ideas on how that could happen while also adhering to state and/or county restrictions due to COVID-19. Your idea might be the one selected for a statewide recognition of the Class of 2020.
Kansas HS Class of 2020 Survey
We appreciate you taking time to share your idea(s) and to honor your fellow graduating seniors in Kansas.
Please submit your response by Friday, May 8th, at noon.
Thank you,

Parents and students 4-17-2020. We are making some small changes to our food service deliveries. Hopefully, these changes will make receiving your meals more convenient and keep everyone safer. Effective Monday April 20th we will deliver meals twice a week (Mondays and Tuesdays) instead of 4 days a week. Monday routes will remain the same, but, will deliver a full week of meals (5 breakfast and 5 lunch) to the bus stops which will eliminate the need to have a meal delivery on Thursday. Tuesday bus routes will also remain the same and those kids will also receive a full week of meals and not have a delivery on Friday. Car-line will still run on Wednesdays at JES from 11 am to noon. In conclusion, beginning the week of April 20th there will be NO Thursday or Friday bus deliveries for the remainder of the school year.

Parents and Students 4-8-2020. We need your help to keep our kids safe and slow down the spread of COVID-19. Most of you are doing an awesome job of staying at home so we can get back to normalcy quicker. Some of you still believe this will not impact your life or a loved one even if you are a carrier of the virus. USD 346 has been working closely with the Linn County Sheriffs office to report any student gatherings that are not a part of the stay home order. Attached you will find overview of the Kansas Stay Home order, please take heed to these guidelines written by our Health officials. We are blessed to live in a community where Law Enforcement, Health Officials and Schools work closely with one another to keep families safe.

Parents and students 4-3-2020. This week we fed over 4000 meals to the children of our district. Teachers have rolled out learning for your students and we are desperately trying to find a "new normal" for school. As for food service about 3 to 5 families a day who "missed the bus". If you know you are not going to be present to get your meals please call the school and cancel your order for that day. We expect your child to be at the bus stop on time and should not have to call or honk the horn before they come out of the house. Educationally, we expect all students to participate in the continuous learning opportunities offered by the district to the fullest extent possible, without placing additional burdens and hardships on our families. If you have trouble with connectivity or understanding assignments please email or call our staff and we will gladly assist students and families overcome barriers and obstacles. On the lighter side, one student recently asked me, "do you really expect us to do our assignments?" My answer, "only if you want to pass your class and graduate".

Attention high school & junior high parents and guardians. Please read this message at the following link from JLHS yearbook staff.

Parents and Students 3-30-2020. Today was a great day of caring for the children of USD #346 by our staff. Teachers have been busy getting Continuous Learning Plans ready for your child. Meanwhile, food service, bus drivers, and classified staff prepared and delivered over 425 meals. As a reminder on food deliveries - we can NOT touch anything on your property. To keep social distance and keep our employees safe we cannot ring your doorbell, put meals in your cooler, in your trunk, in your mailbox, or in the seat of your car (today's requests). Thank you for understanding why we cannot touch a surface you have touched. Buses M2, M4, M7, and 3 suburbans will travel their routes tomorrow with over 600 meals. Wednesday is curb side pick up in the JES teachers parking lot (bus loop) and will have about 900 meals served on that day. Reminder: curb side pick up of meals is every Wednesday 11 to noon...

JLHS Continuous Learning Plan has started rolling out to students. Please be patient with us as we are in uncharted territory. Please understand that each teacher faces unique challenges based upon his or content and the needs of the class being rolled out. Our intent is to release material and classwork slowly so as to not overwhelm students who are also facing a reality unlike anything they are familiar with.
We know that what works for one student or family may not work for others and that we will need time and communication to get those plans in place for everyone.
Teachers and staff have your best interest at heart. They want to help you and they want you to succeed. Feel free to communicate issues or concerns with your teacher or with Mr. Thomas and Mr. Holt.
We WILL get through these tough times by working together.

Continuous Learning Plans will roll out this week. Expect initial contact from teachers by this Friday April 3rd. Initial contact may not contain assignments. Please be patient as teachers test communication platforms and check on students before assignments are handed out.
Stay Safe!

I hope all of you are safe and sound! Here is another video update to end the week with. Huge shoutout to the staff at JLHS and JLJHS! Everybody stepped up huge this week and helped make our Continuous Learning Plans a reality!!

Parents and Students 3-27-2020. Good afternoon - we have some meal delivery information for those of you that signed up. If your child rides Bus #3, 5, 6, or 8 (and you signed up) they will receive their meals at the bus stop on Monday and Thursday of each week. If your child rides #2, 4, or 7 (and you signed up) they will receive their meals on Tuesday and Friday. Buses will leave school by 11:30 each day so please be at your child's bus stop after that (you probably have a general idea how many minutes it takes to get from school to your bus stop). We will deliver some meals by suburban (on Tuesday and Friday for those who signed up) and we will try to notify you if this involves your family. Wednesday, we will run the "pick up" line for food at JES from 11 am to noon. Please drive through the teachers parking lot located on the east side of the school (off of 5th street), you will find us by the tan colored building beside the playground. If you have questions please call Carla Leavitt 913-795-2247

Parents and Students 3-26-2020. We have NEW lunch delivery information for you. It appears we will feed over 350 children breakfast and lunches. We will deliver meals to approximately 300 students. Around 150 (or 1/2) will receive 6 meals (3 breakfast, 3 lunch) on Monday and will receive 4 meals (2 breakfast, 2 lunch) on Thursday of each week. The other half will receive 6 meals on Tuesday and 4 meals on Friday. We will share information soon to when you can expect your bus driver to deliver meals to your bus stop. Wednesday will be our car line pick up at JES (it appears we have around 50 signed up for this option) our plan is to give each of these children 10 meals (5 breakfast and 5 lunch) to last until the next Wednesday. At this time it is impossible for us to accommodate taking meals to 2 different places for divorce or childcare situations, we will request that parents in these scenarios come in on Wednesday to receive their child's meals for a week. Many parents and students used our drive through service today to pick up their child's belongings and received a lunch if they requested it. I would like to clarify if you picked up a lunch today we will not have one prepared for you tomorrow. Car lines at JES and JLHS open at noon again tomorrow, please come as early as possible. We hope to get into a routine soon and all of this will hopefully feel more normal. If you have any questions concerning food service please call Carla Leavitt at our district office 913-795-2247. Thank you!

The Republican Women’s Senior Brunch scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled.

JLHS Seniors - Please check your Schoology Class of 2020 accounts for very important information regarding your graduation credits and SCHOLARSHIPS. Mr. Kramer will keep you updated so begin making it a habit to continue to check into your Class of 2020 Schoology account at the very least weekly if not daily. Parents and Students 3-25-2020 - we are getting closer to Monday's roll out of continuous learning and delivery of meals for some our students. We need to share first that we do not monitor social media (facebook for most of you), if you have a question call your child's school. Thursday (26th) and Friday (27th) afternoon (noon to 5 pm) we will load your students personal belongings and provide a meal (for those who signed up) at curb side service of both buildings. Refer to yesterdays announcement for car line information. As I shared prior if these times do not work for you, call your child's school and we will gladly arrange a time for you to pick up their belongings. Thanks again for your patience and understanding during these changing times.

Student and Parents - Today 3-24-2020 we made calls home to complete survey information and still have a few to go. Because of the quick work of staff members, pick up of your students personal belongings will begin Thursday at noon to 5:00 pm at both buildings. Friday afternoon (same time) we will also be available to pick up items. JES parents will use the carline and loop around to the front office area. High School will use the bus loading zone and stop by the front entrance. For those who signed up for lunch and breakfast we intend to have meals ready for you also. We will provide more guidance tomorrow. Please remain patient and flexible as we go through changing times together.

Here is a short video message concerning JLHS and our efforts at providing a continuous learning opportunity for students during these trying times.

Students and Parents- reminder this is planning week for our staff and moving to online and packet learning will require some patience and flexibility. Administration and Building leadership teams discussed today how teachers and staff members could deliver instruction through 3 teaching strategies, 1. Face to Face (10 students or less- 6 foot apart) 2. On-Line learning 3. Packet learning. We also sent out a survey to all parents today. Tuesday, we hope to make some phone calls home to people who did not answer the survey. Wednesday, we will bring back all certified staff to visit and plan instruction for students and start making contact with students and parents. Thursday, we will bring back the classified staff to work with certified and help bag up all of the students personal belongings to be picked up on Friday. We hope to have a "car line" at both JES and JLHS with meals (for those who request them on the survey) ready for parents to "pick up” with their students belongings (hours of operation on Friday will be determined soon). If you are unable to pick up your students belongings on Friday we will communicate a time that will work for you. During this time we will ask that you practice social distancing and wash your hands often. Children are not allowed in our buildings this week.

Reminder: there is No School for students next week March 23rd through the 27th. Please look at our live feed on our website or our facebook page for more information.

Reminder: there is No School for students next week March 23rd through the 27th. On Monday, March 23rd we will release a survey to gather information of your Internet capabilities in your home. We will also ask if you would like free breakfast and lunch delivered for your child. We are working on a plan to complete your students final weeks of school. We will use 3 delivery strategies to provide continuous learning: 1) take-home learning packets 2) online learning and 3) Limited face-to-face instruction. Please continue to monitor our website, district app, and/or district facebook page for the latest updates.
Finally, questions have surfaced concerning your child’s personal belongings and medications in the school. For medications, our school nurse will contact you to set up a time to meet at school and pick up medications. Access to your child’s belongings may occur the week of March 30th, if access to buildings is still allowed by our health agencies. We realize this is an unprecedented time, working together we will accomplish success.
