Social media is stealing precious educational time from the school.  Instagram has been used by over two thirds of our students at the Jr. High and High school to share pictures with their followers that contain words in the picture (called memes) to make fun of, bully, harass, or embarrass other students and staff members.  Some of these pictures can be viewed as humorous, unless it is you or a loved one that is being targeted.  Our server and all school devices block Instagram.  Many students are accessing this form of social media on their personal cell phone, usually during non-school hours.  To ensure Instagram is not being used during the school day I have asked the Administration and Staff members to follow our district policy and not allow students to use their phones during class.  If your child is caught using his phone during class our staff has been instructed to take it.  If the student refuses to give up his or her cell phone I have instructed our Principals to out of school suspend students who do not comply with their request.  Without parent and community support these “memes” may lead some of our students to consider harming themselves or others, are inappropriate in nature, and will not be tolerated at school.
